JARDIN MEDIEVAL DE SAINT JEAN DES ANNEAUX

BEZIERS , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

The medieval garden is located next to the domain of St Jean d’Aureilhan, all around the Romanesque chapel of the same name. In this peaceful setting, out of time but in the heart of a hectic district of Béziers, you will travel in the universe of plants. Cultivated and used in the Middle Ages for their medicinal virtues, their symbolic meaning and their gustative qualities in cooking. In the walled garden, also symbolically organized, the tree of life (a cypress) is on the upper platform From the circle that surrounds it -representing the sky-, 4 alleys start. They lead to the 4 cardinal points, and divide the garden into 4 zones symbolizing each of the 4 vital elements (earth, fire, water and air). Free visits with commentary by a botanist are regularly organized in summer.
