About
Originally built in 1602, the building was protected by a superb wooden framework covered in tiles and supported by stone pillars. As the building threatened to collapse, it was demolished and replaced by the current structure in 1904. The new covered market was designed by the Cazèrien architect Hector d’Espouy, in the all-metal style of the period “glorified by Eiffel”. The Hall was adorned with two magnificent statues by the Cazèrian sculptor Frédéric Tourte, “Le Semeur et Pomone” (1905) The Semeur on the north side with the motto “si je donne du bon blé, donnez-moi du bon pain” (if I give good wheat, give me good bread) – a translation from the Occitan language. On the south side, Pomona, “goddess of fruit and the garden”, in her full nudity, which caused a scandal at the time because it was placed in front of the presbytery and at the exit of the church.
