ESCALIER MONUMENTAL

AUCH , Gers – Cultural heritage

About

The monumental staircase was finished in 1863. It links the historic district with the new town. Its 234 steps (374 in all, including the double flights) climb a total of 35 meters.
On the first landing in front of the fountain, the contemporary sculpture “l’Observatoire du temps” by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa was installed in 1992. The engraved text evokes the biblical text of the Flood, referring to the catastrophic flood that shattered the city in 1977. Its glass eye, like a symbolic look-out, searches the sky. The staircase also features “the impossible shelter”, located on the edge of the footbridge on the opposite bank.
From the lower landing, enjoy a gorgeous view over the Gers Valley. On the southern horizon beyond the hill line, you will see the Pyrenees mountain chain when the weather permits.
On the landing lower down, the bronze statue sculpted by Michelet represents the most famous of all Gascons: Charles de Batz, better known as D’Artagnan, Captain of the King’s Musketeers, who was born in Castelmore castle in Lupiac, a village located some forty kilometres from Auch.
