SAINT PRIVAT HERMITAGE

MENDE , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

According to Gregory of Tours, in the 3rd century, the Alamanni invaded the Gabali territory. Chrocus, their leader, demanded that Privat surrender his people. Privat refused and was martyred in a cave on the north-facing slope of Mont-Mimat. Legend has it that he was locked inside a barrel studded with nails pointing inwards and thrown from the top of Mont-Mimat. In the early Middle Ages, his tomb became an important pilgrimage site. Hermits and communities of priests were established there. In 1850, the chapel that still stands today was built, and in 1873, the last hermit, Brother Joseph Laget, transformed and renovated the site. He built a residence and, in 1881, restored the Stations of the Cross. In 1960, Father Durand opened a guesthouse after building a 50-room residence.
