Church Sainte-Quitterie

ESCORNEBOEUF , Gers – Cultural heritage

About

The Sainte-Quitterie parish Church is located in the municipality of Escorneboeuf.

This church built in the middle of the 19th century.

It stands out for its orientation since indeed its chevet is located to the west contrary to the tradition that churches are oriented to the east. It was built by retrieving the materials from the two previous churches. We can also see a reuse room above the gate. This stone represents the papal mitre with the two keys and the three shells. This stone had been offered by pilgrims with the church of Ambon.

It has a major altar carved from wood, painted and gilded in the first half of the 19th century.

A statue of Sainte Quitterie dating from the 16th century is to be discovered.

Two objects classified as historical monuments are found in this church: the reliquary bust of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, painted and gilded from the 17th century and a wooden statue, coming from the church of Saint-Jean, carrying a book in his left hand.
