Eglise Sainte Madeleine
BEZIERS , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
This 11th-14th century church was the scene of the bloodiest episode in the history of Béziers: on July 22, 1209, the “Albigensian Crusade” army led by Simon de Montfort exterminated part of the population of Béziers, men, women and children who had taken refuge here. Thanks to extensive restoration work, its Romanesque simplicity was restored in 1999. But all the transformations of the Gothic era can still be read in the stone… as can the still visible stigmata of the fire set by the Crusaders 800 years ago.
