The church was enlarged in the 15th century, then restored in the 16th century. It was transformed when it was rebuilt in the 17th century in the Catalan-Languedocian style.
. Before 1789, the nobles of Ax were buried in the side chapels of the single nave. The archpriests of Ax and Sabarthès had the privilege of being buried in the choir. Until 1650, the consuls who managed the town’s day-to-day affairs met in the church or in the Saint-Jean-d’Auze chapel adjoining the church3.
The church was repaired and restored twice in the 18th century (1704, 1707, 1774), modified in 1811, repaired again in the 19th century (1824, 1854) and 20th century (1952, 1970). The vault paintings were restored in 1976. The church portal was rebuilt in the 19th century, but retains the doors dating from 1649. The 11th-century church tower was rebuilt in the 19th century. Destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in granite in 1925, inspired by the Andorran style.
In 1886, the Bishop of Vic authorized the return of a fragment of Saint Udaut’s relics to Ax-les-Thermes. The reliquary is located in the Saint-Vincent chapel, first chapel on the left, near the choir. Next to it is a shrine containing relics of Saint Vincent.
