SAINT VICTORIN CHURCH OF VILLEFORT
VILLEFORT , Lozère – Cultural heritage
About
The parish church of Villefort, dedicated to Saint Victorin, is a remarkably cohesive neoclassical building, constructed in a single phase of work. It was likely built on the site of a former 17th-century church, now completely destroyed. The entrance is surmounted by a monumental pediment resting on Doric columns. The inscribed date (1842) probably marks the church’s completion. Inside, the nave, flanked by side aisles, extends over five bays and terminates in a rib-vaulted apse whose long ribs rest on conical corbels. The considerable length of the nave, combined with the rhythm of the Doric columns separating the bays, lends the whole a solemn appearance. Also noteworthy is the beautiful set of stained-glass windows depicting the life of the Virgin and that of Saint Joseph, in 12 large stained-glass windows, works of the stained-glass painter Louis-Victor Gesta.
