CHURCH OF SAINT-VICTOR
MONTESQUIEU-VOLVESTRE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
13th century fortified church classified as a Historic Monument. Inside you will discover the famous painting of Girodet, a beautiful stone tomb of the 15th century. The treasure room houses relics of St Jacques, a collection of reliquary busts, a painting of the school of Fontainebleau etc…
Construction of the church began in 1246 and was completed in 1293. It is dedicated to Saint Victor, a soldier in the Roman legions who was martyred for his faith in 303 during the reigns of the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. Like most churches of the period, it is integrated into the fortifications of the bastide. If you look closely at the top of the tower, you can see similarities with the bell towers of Rieux-Volvestre and the Jacobins in Toulouse: a flat top, no spire, revealing the bell tower’s use as a ‘watchtower’. Treasures await you in the church: – The Entombment – The Girodet, painter Girodet de Coussy.
