SAINT-PRIVAT CHURCH OF BRENOUX

The church of Brenoux, dedicated to Saint Privat, is noteworthy. Built in the 19th century on the site of an earlier church mentioned as early as the 12th century, it is unusual in that it is not oriented, with the chancel facing north (rather than east, as is generally the case for churches). It also houses a fine collection of furnishings. First and foremost is a painting in the right-hand chapel dating from the 17th century. It depicts the martyrdom of Saint Privat, who dies in the arms of a disciple, surrounded by seven figures, his face illuminated by a ray of light, signifying his sanctity. Recently restored in 2017, it is listed as a Historic Monument. The church’s magnificent high altar, in the Neo-Gothic style, is also listed. Its upper section features a series of blind, twin pointed arches, each culminating in a pinnacle. A collection of statuettes of saints is nestled between the pinnacles.
