Eglise Saint-pierre-aux-liens
BASSAN , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
Built on the site of a Visigothic chapel, it is mentioned as early as 990 and dedicated to Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens, whose story is told in the frescoes in the chevet and in the stained-glass windows.
The church hosted meetings of the village consuls, whose archives were kept in a niche in the wall at the base of the bell tower.
The building was remodeled in the 12th century, and fortified in the 14th: with machicolations and reinforced buttresses, and a 20-meter-high bell tower built as a watchtower. In those hard times, the population took shelter behind the ramparts, but also in the church.
Extensive restoration work carried out from October 2012 to March 2013 led to the discovery of one of the largest 19th-century decorations in the region.
