EGLISE SAINT-MARTIN
AIGNE , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
Situated in the heart of the circular village of Aigne, the Romanesque parish church of Saint Martin had a single nave divided into three bays and barrel-vaulted, extended by a semicircular apse. The blind arcatures on the north wall are reminiscent of 11th-century art, but the original building has since been altered many times. The nave was doubled by the construction of a south aisle in the 15th or 16th century, and a private chapel was added in the 17th century. The monumental door on the west facade is in polychrome pink and grey marble, quarried locally. In the Middle Ages, the church square seems to have been the main focus of community life. In the 14th century, it hosted the assembly of family heads represented by two “syndics”, the commune’s first magistrates magistrates of the commune. This collective vocation continued under the Ancien Régime, and by the 18th century the space was almost entirely occupied by an enclosed courtyard belonging to the community. No remains of this courtyard remain. The square was enlarged by the demolition of two houses on the west side in the 20th century: the well, located next to the tree, was on the first floor of one of them. Another house was demolished to the south, creating a link with rue Saint-Martin.
