ÉGLISE SAINT-JEAN DE MALTE
MAUGUIO , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
At the heart of Carnon lies an emblematic place of worship that blends history, architecture and spirituality: the Church of Notre-Dame de la Mer, also known as the Church of Saint-Jean de Malte. Why two names? Because it is dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Mer, but built on land granted to the Order of Malta, hence the name Saint-Jean de Malte. What makes it unique is its architecture in the shape of an inverted ship?s hull, a poetic nod to the nearby Mediterranean. Its proximity to the beach makes it a peaceful place for reflection and prayer. The presence next door of the former “temporary” church, now restored and renamed Notre-Dame de la Mer, adds a further historical dimension to the visit. Just a stone?s throw from the port and beaches, the Saint-Jean de Malte church is a real gem to be discovered on a stroll through Carnon. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, a history buff or simply in search of serenity, this is the place for you.
