Théziers’ skyline is formed by a fortified church (12th century) built on a rock into which the sacristy is carved, and on which the tower and bell tower rest.
Originally a small Romanesque church, the apse and barrel-vaulted nave remain.
Saint-Grégoire church underwent two successive extensions:
– in length, with the addition of a bay to the west, vaulted with liernes and tiercerons
– in width, with the addition of a larger nave to the south of the old one.
The former Romanesque church, with a barrel-vaulted nave and semicircular apse, can be found in the current north side aisle.
The end bay, vaulted with liernes and tiercerons, dates from 1537.
The nave was built in the 17th century. Its eastern wall, with no chevet overhang, intersects the old rampart at the fortified gate.
This latest addition comprises three bays, separated by thick external buttresses.
The south door opens between two Doric pilasters with molded transoms.
The frieze is decorated with six triglyphs, each bearing a suspended drop. The metopes are bare, with the exception of the central one, which bears a bucranium with small foliage drops.
The broken pediment, adorned with dentils, frames a shell niche, itself framed by Ionic pilasters whose scrolled transoms are adorned with ovals and rosaries. The whole is surmounted by a wide architrave with rules, a bare frieze and a triangular pediment with dentils. The portal superimposes the Doric and Ionic orders.
