About

“Prunedell d’Avall has a church, formerly a parish church, dedicated to Saint Stephen, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries. It is therefore a pre-Romanesque church, facing east. The choir is narrower and lower than the nave, and has a trapezoidal floor plan. Its quadrangular bell tower is lit by twin windows. This ensemble is a rare example of pre-Romanesque religious architecture in Roussillon, which has only been partially altered by the addition of a chapel and sacristy on the south side. The entrance portal is in pink marble (13th century). The building is made of rough-cut blocks assembled with mortar. Saint-Etienne’s church must have been vaulted from the outset, both in the nave and in the choir. It has altarpieces dedicated to Saint Stephen and the Virgin Mary, the woodwork of which was extensively repainted in the 19th and 20th centuries. in the 19th and 20th centuries.
