ÉGLISE SAINT-ETIENNE
LUNAS-LES-CHATEAUX , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
Romanesque church located east of the village of Dio. The church dates back to the XII century: it was built by the monks of the Abbey of Psalmodi. It has been subject to later modifications, such as the addition of chapels in the 15th century or the reconstruction of the nave at a later date. The church has been listed as a historical monument since 5 May 1998. To the east, the church has a semicircular chevet with powerful buttresses and covered with slate. To the west is a rectangular bell-tower-porch, also covered with slate, whose western portal (called “Gate of the Dead”) has a two-colour decoration consisting of triangles of black basalt and light sandstone. Between the two is a long, three-bay, tile-covered nave.
