EGLISE SAINT ETIENNE

ILLE-SUR-TET , Pyrénées-Orientales – Cultural heritage

About

Located in the heart of Ille-sur-Têt’s historical centre, the parish church of Saint Etienne has been built from the middle of the XVIIth century to the second part of the XVIIIth century. If its global architecture is characteristic of north catalonian buildings of this period, its most distinctive features are its exceptionnal front and its vast dimensions comparable to a cathedral’s. With its rich medieval bell tower, this church is the witness of Ille-sur-Têt richness during the XVIIth and XVIIIth century. Inside, the eleven lateral chapels and the altar table houses retables built between 1736 and the beginning of XXth century. The organ chest has been made by a south-catalonian sculptor in the early XVIIIth century, and with its pipes, it composes a unique set in the Roussillon.
