EGLISE SAINT ETIENNE

ILLE-SUR-TET , Pyrénées-Orientales – Cultural heritage

About

Located in the heart of the historic centre of Ille, the parish church of Saint-Etienne was built between the mid-seventeenth century and the second half of the eighteenth century. While its general architecture is typical of the religious buildings constructed at the time in the former North Catalan counties, the building stands out from the rest with its exceptional façade and vast dimensions, giving it the appearance of a cathedral. Flanked by its rich medieval bell tower, the church bears witness to the wealth of the town of Ille in the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, the eleven side chapels and the high altar house altarpieces created between 1736 and the early 20th century. The organ case, made by a sculptor from Vic in southern Catalonia in the early 18th century, and the pipework are unique in Roussillon.
