Eglise Saint Etienne de Villeneuve
VILLENEUVE-LES-BEZIERS , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
The village was built in a circle around an 11th-century edifice. Damaged several times, it has been rebuilt several times. The outstanding feature is the bell tower, with its exceptional slenderness, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries for the lower part. It was later topped – in the 12th century – by two octagonal storeys, themselves crowned in the 16th century by battlements and gargoyles. Inside, the church boasts an interesting array of furnishings, including a baptismal font, a wrought-iron and marble holy table, an organ, a red marble stoup and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
