The parish church of La Salvetat bears witness to the fervour of a once densely populated village. Marble, sculpted tympanum and chapels make it a major heritage site.
In the heart of La Salvetat, the parish church of Saint-Albin impresses with its size — a reminder of a time when the village counted nearly 5,000 inhabitants in the 19th century, compared to just over 1,100 today. The current building, erected in 1868, replaced a 17th-century church that had become too small for the growing population.
Inside, one discovers a majestic choir supported by four marble pillars and flanked by holy-water fonts, all preserved from the former church. At the entrance, the tympanum depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, sculpted in 1951 by Antonio Alos, immediately attracts attention.
A detour to the back left chapel reveals a copy of Notre-Dame d’Entraygues, linked to a local legend. Another moving detail: the wooden Christ affixed to the right pillar of the choir, coming from the chapel of the White Penitents. At its feet, a skull symbolises penance.
