EGLISE ROMANE SAINT-PIERRE SAINT-PAUL

ISPAGNAC , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

The legend is that the church was built on a druidic temple location. The church was a part of a monastery, cited for the first time in the middle of the 12th century among the possessions of the Aurillac abbey. In 1365, the Pope Urbain V establishes the priory of Ispagnac as a conventual priory and sets it to be dependent of the benedictine abbey Saint-Victor de Marseille. In 1580, the church was seriously damaged by Protestants. It was restored during the early 17th century, and then during the 18th century. Renovation works were also carried out in 1807, 1853 and at the beginning of the 20th century. The edifice of the 12th century only had transformations in its bell towers which would date from the 15th or 16th century. One, octagonal, overlooks the crossing; the other, square, is on the west facade.
