SAINT-HILAIRE-DE-LAVIT PARISH CHURCH
SAINT-HILAIRE-DE-LAVIT , Lozère – Cultural heritage
About
After the transformation of the old Romanesque church of Saint-Hilaire-de-Lavit into a Protestant temple in 1796, the Catholics of the parish had a church built in the 19th century, in the hamlet of l’Elze. Consecrated in 1854 and built entirely of schist (except for the corner quoins and the arch of the bays), it blends in very well with the surrounding landscape and buildings. The presbytery extends the nave. The whole ensemble, in the Neo-Gothic style, is composed of a single nave ending in a semi-circular apse. Two lateral chapels form a transept at the level of the last bay. The interior is coated with a light paint that makes the whole bright. In the chapels, the two painted wooden altars, restored, are surmounted by a triangular pediment supported by crenellated columns. A Stations of the Cross is illustrated with engravings depicting the Passion of Christ and a painting of the Sacred Heart is placed behind the high altar
