Notre-Dame-du-Camp Church
PAMIERS , Ariège – Cultural heritage
About
One of Pamiers’ must-sees is the church of Notre Dame du Camp.
This church was built at the end of the 12th century outside the town walls in the middle of the fields, hence its name: Notre Dame des Champs (today: Notre Dame du Camp). In the 14th century, due to the considerable growth of the population, this too small Romanesque church was enlarged and a crenellated façade topped by two turrets was built as an observation post. Destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1577, with the exception of the bell tower, it was rebuilt in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the original 12th century portal was dismantled and redesigned. Only a few rare vestiges remain
