The Cartulaire de Maguelone only mentions a church in Les Matelles in the 12th century. It is highly probable that an earlier building existed, located near the old cemetery on the right bank of the Lirou. The current building was incorporated into the ramparts. Under the Ancien Régime, it was used for meetings of the Val de Montferrand village assembly.
