About
Named after the church of Saint-André, this is one of the best-preserved 12th-century religious buildings. Fortified by the Knight Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem in the 14th century – and not by the Knights Templar – to protect themselves from brigands during periods of insecurity, it was then occupied by the Order of Malta in the 18th century. The Church known as Des Templiers has the architectural /hallmarks of a medieval fortress, with traces of a drawbridge, battlements, loopholes and two towers, one of which is known as the Arsenal and the other as a dungeon (now equipped with a clock). A remarkable vault depicting Christ and the four Evangelists adorn the entrance. Within the ramparts, tombs reveal a former cemetery. In the choir, the gilded vault showing Saint Andrew next to Jesus, the high altar and the 18th-century baroque tabernacle harmoniously illuminate the interior of the monument. The Chapelle N.D. de la Pitié, built in the 17th century as an ex-voto dedicated to the Virgin Mary following the terrible plague of 1650, now houses the Musée du Trésor (Treasure Museum), an exhibition of sacred art objects, in which the oldest date back to the 13th century. Victor Hugo drew this unusual church from his bedroom window during his stay in Luz in 1843. > Open daily from 8.45am to 7pm (museum open in July and August on Sunday afternoons, Monday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and Friday afternoons). > The Orphéon de Luz, a men’s vocal ensemble made up entirely of amateurs whose repertoire includes traditional Pyrenean songs, performs once a month in summer in the church (see events’calendar).
