This magnificent, 40-meter-high monumental bell tower, built in the Southern Gothic style, is the tallest in the Tarn. Construction began in 1381 under Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix and Béarn, who was then lord of Saint-Sulpice.
Of all the region’s churches, this is certainly one of the most impressive due to its dizzying height—40 meters tall, the tallest in the Tarn! Magnificent gargoyles adorn the side chapels, and you can admire Gaston Fébus’s coat of arms on the church’s portal. A must-see.
Work on the nave began around 1360. It was a single-nave structure built of brick, in the characteristic style of Southern Gothic architecture.
It was around 1381 that Gaston Fébus, then lord of Saint-Sulpice, began its construction. In the midst of the Hundred Years’ War, the church took on the appearance of a veritable fortress. Upon his death in 1391, the Duke of Berry, the town’s new lord, halted construction, refusing to allow the bell tower to rise higher than the castle’s towers… After his fall from grace, the bell tower was raised to its original height in the mid-15th century.
