Notre-Dame collegiate church and cloister
VILLENEUVE-LEZ-AVIGNON , Gard – Cultural heritage
About
Cardinal Arnaud de Via, nephew of Pope John XXII, founded a chapter of twelve canons in his livery, to which he bequeathed his property in 1336. He enlarged the chapel, which became the collegiate church of Notre-Dame.
In 1350, the canons had the cloister and belfry built adjacent to the church. In 1792, the collegiate church became the parish church, replacing the Saint-Pons church. This “paradise” features a sculpted decoration of flowers and foliage that is one of the finest examples of Gothic naturalism. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame and its cloister are listed as a Monument Historique.
