Medieval town of Sévérac-le-Château
SEVERAC-LE-CHATEAU , Aveyron – Cultural heritage
About
Discover the medieval town of Sévérac-le-Château, designated a “Petite Cité de Caractère”, with its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and historic monuments. Self-guided visits all year round and guided tours in summer.
Labelled as a “Petite Cité de Caractère” (Small Town of Character – French heritage label), it is one of the largest medieval towns in the Aveyron region. Passing through one of its fortified gates is like stepping back in time. Once protected by ramparts, moats and four gates (two of which still remain), the town boasts remarkable architectural heritage: half-timbered houses, vaulted passageways, overhanging upper floors, spiral stair towers, and mullioned windows.
As you stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll discover the Romanesque fountain, the Church of Saint-Sauveur, the covered market (the Sesteyral), the Consuls’ House, Jeanne’s House, and the former shops.
The town is open to self-guided visits all year round.
In summer, the old shops are brought to life by artists and craftspeople.
