A favorite stop on the road to St Jacques de Compostela. Lauzerte country house high in the Quercy Blanc 39 km northwest of Montauban, Tarn-et-Garonne, the house of Lauzerte overlooks a landscape of southern colors, ranks among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” and is a necessary stop on the road to St Jacques de Compostela.

Originally, Hill was a Gallic oppidum Lauzerte. Its present name dates from around the year one thousand. From the Latin “lucerna” lamp, it means a great position visible from afar like a light. At the end of the twelfth century, the Count of Toulouse received the hill donation to build an Castelnau, protected by a castle town.

The foundation of a strategic and economic interest, was an immediate success. Two hundred building lots were distributed to settlers, attracted by the freedoms granted. Lauzerte around 1200, stretched along a single street in the north, while a path skirted the plateau south. Between the two, the space was quickly occupied and the space created on the model of Montauban. Suburbs achevèrent later urbanization fortified site.
