THE ARCHBISHOP’S CASTLE

CAPESTANG , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

The interpretation center evokes the power of the archbishops of Narbonne at the end of the Middle Ages, their interest in Capestang, the magnificence of the castle where the States of Languedoc sat and where the Duke of Berry stayed. The ceremonial room of the castle is the highlight of the visit with its walls alternating with the coat of arms of France and B. de Fargues (14th century) and, a real jewel, the painted ceiling of the 15th century: 5 beams decorated with foliage on a red background, supported by brackets on which are painted the gules of Leviathan; 140 closoirs with the most varied themes: courtly love, nobles and peasants, real and fantastical animals, scenes of hunting and tournaments, religion and triviality.
