Saint-Privat Castle
VERS-PONT-DU-GARD , Gard – Cultural heritage
About
A prestigious arrival for a trip back in time, on a bucolic path that glides along the Gardon, impetuous and calm, proud and wild, to the castle that has preserved all the layers of time, the passage of men…
The park and gardens: Created under Louis XIII by the Faret family, the gardens are divided into three distinct parts:
1. The front park, near the chapel. It is planted with fine lime, mulberry and hackberry trees.
2. The Romantic Park. This park, with its three-hundred-year-old trees, was built on the upper terrace, which dates back to the 18th century. At the center of the terrace is the Neptune Basin.
3. The Jardin à la Française. On the former Louis XIII garden, which had become a large, charmless orchard and hydrangea garden, Jacques Rouché designed a French garden in the great tradition of regular gardens inspired by “water buffets” and Italian rocaille.
The chapel: In the 18th century, Pierre de Faret had the present chapel built for his wife. Jacques Rouxhé, a friend of painter Georges Desvallières, asked him to decorate the chapel of Saint Privat, which he found too outdated.
