CASTLE OF SAINT-JULIEN-D’ARPAON
CANS ET CEVENNES , Lozère – Cultural heritage
About
The ruins of Saint-Julien-d’Arpaon Castle sit atop a cliff overlooking the village of the same name. The first records of the castle date back to the 13th century, a period during which the lords of Anduze owned the barony of Florac, including this castle. In 1618, the castle was dismantled while the Gabriac family held ownership. In the 18th century, the castle passed by inheritance to the Montcalm family, originally from Rouergue. This family restored the building, but the castle suffered the ravages of time and is currently in ruins. Nevertheless, you can still see the remains of numerous semicircular arches, a watchtower, a large lower hall with a pointed arch, and even a dovecote built directly into the castle’s structure. Note: Please be very careful in ruins. Above all, do not climb any walls and do not run. The risk of being struck by falling stones is significant.
