Château de Montréal-de-Sos

Former 13th-century château of the Counts of Foix.

Dating from the 13th century, this castle was one of the most important in the county of Foix. It is also one of the most important Iron Age oppida in Ariège. Archaeological excavations have enabled us to retrace the site’s history, uncovering the remains of the surrounding walls and towers. The area surrounding the fortress, which dominates the Auzat-Vicdessos basin, is also worth exploring, in particular the caves and balsams in which paintings are the subject of mysticism linked to Catharism.
