Montfa Castle

The castle ruins, which are on private land, are currently being restored and preserved. The site can be reached via the Puechs footpath in Montfa or from the car park at the entrance to the property.

First mentioned in 1275 in a will drawn up by Isarn de Lautrec, the castle has had a particularly eventful history, having been caught up, in particular, in the Wars of Religion and a number of legal disputes. In the early 20th century, it belonged to Alphonse de Toulouse-Lautrec, father of the famous painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec-Montfa. Following his death, the castle was stripped of its furnishings and subsequently dismantled, particularly around 1945.
The ruins of the castle, now privately owned, are currently being restored and preserved.
The site (castle and orchard) can be reached via the ‘Sentier des Puechs – In the Footsteps of Toulouse-Lautrec’ trail in Montfa, or from a car park on the castle grounds. Simply follow the signs.
