Castle Bioule

BIOULE , Tarn-et-Garonne – Cultural heritage

About

This well-preserved medieval fortress is a remarkable building. Built at the end of the 13th century, like the one in Nègrepelisse.

It is organized around a central courtyard according to a quadrangular plan with circular volumes at the corners. Its plan and its organization are more complex than those of Nègrepelisse because here, the brick construction included former buildings (chapel and quadrangular keep, both of Romanesque period). The history of the castle in the Middle Ages is linked to that of the Cardaillac family, close to the kings of France. The medieval frescoes in the hall of the priests and in the chapel are the jewel of this castle which, another curiosity, has housed the village school since 1889.
