CHAPEL OF NOTRE DAME DE NAZARETH
SAINT-CHINIAN , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
According to legend, in the year 840 the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd. However, it is only in 1102 that this sanctuary is mentioned in the charter of the archbishop of Narbonne. In 1120, after the return of the first crusade to the Holy Land, the name Nazareth was given to it. The Benedictine monks who founded the abbey of Saint-Agnan at the beginning of the 9th century, are certainly not strangers to the building of the first chapel. In 1789, during the Revolution, the chapel became national property and was closed to worship. It is only at the beginning of the XIXth century that it becomes again the sanctuary that we know today. A 9 km walk from Saint-Chinian will allow you to discover this remarkable site. The association of the Friends of Notre Dame de Nazareth offers guided tours by appointment. It also provides, on request, a room adjacent to the chapel for picnics in case of bad weather.
