About
The chapel in cemetery number 1 is the oldest religious building in the town of Saint-Chély d’Apcher. Indeed, it is mentioned as early as the beginning of the 12th century, in 1109, as “Sancti Yieri de Capoleg” (Saint John of the Chapel). It was also the town’s first parish church until 1689, when the parish was transferred to the Church of Saint-Hilaire within the town walls. Romanesque in style, it now consists of only an apse and two side chapels built of granite. Its pointed arch doorway is surmounted by an oculus. The building itself is topped by an imposing wrought-iron cross depicting Christ on the Cross. The ends of the arms are adorned with finials. The chapel is closed and not open to the public.
