Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs
VILLEFRANCHE-DE-ROUERGUE , Aveyron – Cultural heritage
About
The Black Penitents’ chapel is a baroque jewel of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. Behind its sober facade hides a rich decoration with a painted vault, a colorful and golden altarpiece and six big paintings.
The exterior of this Baroque chapel, built in the 17th century, conserves a great simplicity: modest size, plan in the shape of a Greek cross, classical façade, curious double steeple. It surprises for the profusion of its interior decoration! Decorated with a painted ceiling and 18th century paintings, the chapel houses an 18th century sculpted wooden altarpiece, with gold leaf, representing the scenes of Passion and the life of Christ. The brightly coloured painted wooden vaulted ceiling is of a naïve style and makes reference to the cult of the cross.
