CHAPELLE DES PÉNITENTS BLANCS

SAINT-GERVAIS-SUR-MARE , Hérault – Cultural heritage

About

The Chapel of the Penitents, probably built at the beginning of the 17th century, houses two magnificent gilded wooden altarpieces. It was built and maintained by the Brotherhood of the White Penitents composed of many wood craftsmen of the village. The chapel is therefore dedicated to St Joseph, patron saint of carpenters, represented as a statue on the right wall and on the left side of the altarpiece. It was a chapel that was part of a complex to which the Hostel-Dieu (hospice) also belonged. The lay brotherhood of the White Penitents occupied it in 1670
It consists of four vaulted bays, but has two gilded wooden altarpieces from the end of the 17th – beginning of the 18th century in the choir
The central altarpiece, in triptych: the central painting represents the parents happy to find their son, “Jesus brought back from the temple”. There, as in the side painting on the left, Joseph is holding a stick of fleur-de-lys. On the right, the Virgin of the Apocalypse, the moon under his feet
The side altarpiece: under the coat of arms of the Marquis of Saint-Gervais and his wife, the painting of the Annunciation
In the nave, two canvases: in a beautiful play of light and shadow, a Virgin and Child; the Baptism of Christ. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
