Chapel of Bonneval
LA SALVETAT-SUR-AGOUT , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
The Chapel of Bonneval: a small 19th-century gem built of gneiss, a discreet witness to local faith, restored and open to visitors all year round.
Perched at the locality of Bonneval, this chapel is an elegant building from the mid-19th century (1841-1848), constructed to offer mountain inhabitants an accessible place of worship, far from Lacaune or La Salvetat-sur-Agout.
Its simple, refined architecture is characterised by rubble and dressed gneiss masonry, covered with a long-sloped slate roof. The bell, engraved “LOUISON”, was cast in Toulouse, a quiet reminder of the time when the chapel briefly served as a parish (1864) before being closed in the 1940s and revived in 1976 thanks to a beautiful restoration.
