Cathédrale Saint Nazaire et Saint Celse
BEZIERS , Hérault – Cultural heritage
About
One of the emblems of Béziers, visible from afar and located on the “acropolis of Béziers”, as we say here. Built on the remains of a Roman temple and the ruins of a Romanesque cathedral, the majestic and austere Saint Nazaire watches over the city.
It’s one of the emblems of Béziers, visible from afar, as if standing at the prow of the ancient city’s Roman and medieval ramparts. On the “acropolis of Béziers”, as we say here.
Built on the ruins of the Romanesque cathedral burnt down during the Crusade against the Cathars (1209), and on the remains of a Roman temple, Saint Nazaire, majestic and austere, watches over the city.
In 1209, it “imploded like a pomegranate”, set on fire by the King’s and Pope’s troops, commanded by Arnaud Amaury. Reconstruction lasted until the 15th century.
The cloister of St. Nazaire was never completed, however, due to a lack of funds: many of the capitals on the garden-side colonnades are missing.
