About
The Neste Irrigation Canal was built by Colomès de Juillan between 1851 and 1859 to irrigate the hills of Gascony. Part of the mountain water is diverted and conveyed by a gentle slope from Sarrancolin to the Lannemezan plateau, a distance of 29 km. This canal feeds 17 rivers including the Gers, the Baïse and the Save.
At the beginning of the 20th century, reservoir lakes (Caillaouas, Orédon) increased the flow of the canal.
The water is redistributed for many uses: drinking water, industry, irrigation, river sanitation..
