ANCIENNE EGLISE SAINT-PIERRE-DES-CUISINES
TOULOUSE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
Built in the late IV Century just outside Ancient Tolosa, this is a church that has known how to reinvent itself and will be sure to astound you!
A funerary basilica in late Antiquity, then a parish church and finally the Cluniac priory of Moissac in the 11th century, the church has been transformed, enlarged and remodelled throughout history. Today, Saint-Pierre-des-cuisines church has been converted into an auditorium for the conservatoire. Now dedicated to music, you can still visit the archaeological crypt: an underground trail through the heart of a necropolis that bears witness to burial rites. However, we still don’t know anything about its mysterious name, which may refer to modest craftsmen or the presence of a public oven: the enigma remains complete! The old church can only be visited on guided tours from the Musée Saint-Raymond, and is also open from time to time during the European Archaeology Days and the European Heritage Days.
