ANCIENNE ABBAYE DE SAINTE-ENIMIE

SAINTE-ENIMIE , Lozère – Cultural heritage

About

According to the legend, the abbey was founded by Enimie, daughter of King Clotaire II, cured from the leprosy after having bathed herself in the Burle source. Between the 8th and 10th century, the two monasteries, one for women and the other for men, were destroyed by invasions. The bishop of Mende gave the ruins of the monastery up to the abbey of Saint-Chaffre-en-velay in 951. This monastery persisted until 1789. The modern Ermitage chapel contains the cave where Sainte Enimie would have lived. The edifices that remain are not older than the 12th century. They are arranged in a right angle shape on a platform. The building facing south had a lot of changes. Only the vaulted room at the east end has kept sculpted capitals. A fireplace from the 15th century exists on the first floor. The east building is fuller. It is a long room with four bays, covered with a barrel vault with columns.
