BELLEGARDE-SAINTE-MARIE , Haute-Garonne – Cultural heritage
About
The abbey was founded in a Gascony valley in 1852 by Cistercian trappist monks coming from the abbey Notre-Dame d’Aiguebelle, Drôme.
Come and discover the history of this Abbey, from its beginnings (which tradition has it dating back to the 11th century), to the laying of the foundation stone in 1850 by the monks, not forgetting the arrival of the Village of François in 2020. A free guided tour is offered every Saturday, starting at 3pm and lasting about an hour, from the Abbey shop. On the programme: The neo-Romanesque abbey church, built in 1860 by the architect Delors, and its modern stained glass windows by Marc Soulier; The library and its secrets; The former chapter house; The cloister ; The pilgrimage chapel, with its historical roots dating back to the 12th century; Not forgetting the presentation of the Village de François project, with its reception of vulnerable people, based on three pillars: living together, economic activity and integral ecology; Finally, there is the shop, which was there from the time of the monks, and the crypt, where Brother Marie-Joseph Cassant (1878 – 1903), who was beatified in 2004 and is now world-renowned, is laid to rest.
