Saint-André Abbey
VILLENEUVE-LEZ-AVIGNON , Gard – Cultural heritage
About
Saint-André Abbey was built by the Benedictines in the 10th century near the tomb of Sainte-Casarie (6th c.).
Its influence was considerable in the region, where it owned over 200 priories from Uzès to Forcalquier.
The buildings, rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries to designs by Pierre Mignard, were partly demolished after the French Revolution.
Between terraces, ponds and the remains of Romanesque churches, you’ll find Tuscan flowerbeds, century-old olive trees and other Mediterranean plants. And, as you stroll along the cypress-lined botanical path, you’ll find one of the most beautiful views of Mont Ventoux, the Luberon, the Alpilles and the Palais des Papes.
