REFUGE DU MAUPAS

About

A cosy and friendly little eagle’s nest, the Maupas refuge sleeps 30 (3 bunk rooms for 10 people on 3 levels, no shower room or bathroom, cold water and an outdoor toilet) and invites you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of summer by taking to the heights in the heart of the Pyrenees! It may be far from the sandy beaches, but it is close to peaks over 3,000 metres high and the Cirque des Crabioules, passing through centuries-old beech forests, summer pastures, torrents and waterfalls! A beautiful succession of lakes teeming with fish, trails where you’ll often spot chamois and vultures, and stunning rock faces to climb: everything you need for a successful visit to Le Maupas.

The Maupas refuge is a remarkable viewpoint over the Cirque des Crabioules and Superbagnères. Close to lakes, it is a must-see stop on the way to the Pic du Maupas or Pic de Boum. It is ideally located for a break on a loop between the Gouffre d’Enfer, the Cirque des Crabioules and the Bleu, Charles and Célinda lakes.

Ascent time from the Lys valley: 4 to 4.5 hours, 1,300 metres of elevation gain through forests, meadows and lakes.
Meals, drinks and dormitory accommodation are available. Bivouacking is possible nearby.
The Maupas refuge has a single dormitory with 30 beds, 3 bunk beds for 10 people on 3 levels. There are no showers or bathrooms, but there is a cold water tap and a toilet outside. There is a dining room with seating for 26 people.
When the refuge is unmanned, there is no catering, kitchen or crockery available. Free access to the hall and dormitory. Payment can be made in cash or by cheque on site (box provided) or via the refuge’s website. No reservations possible, no drinking water, but heating and electricity are available.
