CASTRUM
SAINT-ALBAN-SUR-LIMAGNOLE , Lozère – Rental accommodation
About
Floating above the trees, rising toward the sky: the verticality of the vernacular heritage found along the Way of St. James inspired the artistic team during their initial sketches—from the towers of Saint-Chély and the *hórreos* (granaries typical of Asturias and Galicia) to the pigeon lofts of the Tarn. These structures are raised off the ground on granite stone pillars to protect them from dampness. The *Castrum*—currently taking shape—draws its origins from both this heritage and the powerful granite presence in Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole and the wider Margeride massif: fountains, washhouses, pillars, and rocky outcrops. Here, granite asserts its presence. Wood does too, with a forest that will host the art-refuge, and a desire to play with these two material qualities—the combination of stone and wood. The *Castrum* will be carefully placed on the site without disrupting the environment, resembling a silent creature resting alongside the other trees.
