Ferme aquacole Truite de l’Aston
LES CABANNES , Ariège
About
Truite de l’Aston fish farm specializes in rearing trout in the cool waters of the Aston valley.
Situated in the heart of this wild and magnificent setting, at the foot of the Plateau de Beille, the aquaculture farm was founded in 1952, and enjoys an excellent reputation thanks to the quality of its water, fed directly by the Aston river and numerous mountain lakes.
The valley’s unique environment provides trout with ideal growing conditions, close to those of their wild cousins.
Since its takeover in 2017 by Morgan Catala and Amandine Lafon, the farm has seen a new dynamic, while preserving traditional know-how.
Life cycle and diet :
Aston trout have a long life cycle, essential for balanced growth. They grow in cool water, between 0 and 14°, and are hand-fed with rations calculated according to the average weight of each pond. Their diet consists mainly of fish flesh, plus the micro-organisms and insects the river is naturally rich in.
Commitment to well-being:
The production team takes daily care of the trout’s well-being. This includes water management, regular oxygen measurements in the water, and gentle hand-feeding. To ensure gentle handling, equipment such as a sorter and mechanical fish pump are used, minimizing stress on the fish by keeping them submerged.
Our daily work has just one aim: to offer quality products, while respecting the environment and the natural needs of the fish.
A true success story of sustainable aquaculture in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees!
