The medical history of Toulouse through 7 centuries of astonishing medicines and surgical instruments, all in a remarkable building whose garden is home to a giant shell.

On the left bank of the River Garonne, the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques is a medieval hospital that has been listed by UNESCO since 1998 and now houses the administrative offices of the CHU of Toulouse, the European Institute of Telemedicine as well as the museums of the history and instruments of medicine. A rich collection of tableaux, sculptures and medical objects retraces the evolution of the hospitals of Toulouse and of how medicine was taught. The halls (of pilgrims and columns) and the chapel of the hôtel-Dieu are also worth the detour (not freely accessible), as well as its gardens, where there is a basin in the shape of a giant scallop shell that reminds us that the place is on the pilgrimage route to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
